“One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out.”
Luke 8:22 (NIV2011)
I like how the NIV2011 puts this. It was just “one day.” The disciples had no clue what was about to happen. But Jesus did. They were in training. Their faith-muscles needed stretching. They needed to know the true identity of Jesus. They would soon go through a tempest so terrifying, they would despair of life itself. Survival would be contingent upon absolute faith in the one who said, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.”
The storms arose, and, like in our lives, a wave of helplessness overwhelmed. They said, “Master, Master, we are going to drown!” Jesus was asleep. I am sure you have felt the same way. Your life is one great storm after another and you feel as though God is sleeping.
Our hope is in the LORD, who is not asleep. ”He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.” Psalm 121:3-4
God is always mindful of what you are going through. The disciples had a promise: “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” In the midst of the storm, we have a promise. “He who keeps you will not slumber.”
“He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” Matthew 8:26-27
What kind of man is this? He is the Creator, who has control over everything. When the storms rage and confusion abounds, remember that Jesus is not asleep even when He gives the appearance. It is a chance to exercise those faith-muscles, trusting that He has everything under control and that He will bring you to the other side, safely.
